Watch: Can flexible hydrogen production solve our dry year risk?
New Zealand has several options to solve its dry year problem. All of these can deliver security of supply and reduced carbon emissions - the key differentiator is cost.

As New Zealand seeks to decarbonise its electricity system, dry year risk management will remain a key problem to solve, even as balancing wind & solar variability will grow in importance as an additional flexibility challenge.
A new study by Concept Consulting assesses the benefit that a flexibly operated green hydrogen facility could provide towards solving New Zealand’s dry year, and wind & solar flexibility challenges.
The study tests flexible hydrogen production against a number of other scenarios. These are retaining the Huntly coal reserve plant, retaining a small number of thermal peakers, overbuilding renewable generation and pumped hydro in the South Island.
